Determining the best wax to use when making candles is largely dependant upon the type of candle you are going to make. You’ll want to use a different wax to make different styles of candles-the only way to make a gel container candle is to buy gel candle wax!

If you are looking for the most economical way to make your candles at home, paraffin wax is the best choice. It can be purchased in one pound blocks of white or clear wax, and is easily melted down. Paraffin wax can be dyed and scented to make a variety of colored and fragrant candles.

If you prefer to make all-natural candles, you may decide that soy or beeswax candles are the best for you. Soy candles are usually made by purchasing pounds of flakes of the soy wax products. You may need to add palm wax to your soy candles to improve their consistency, and still retain the all-natural qualities of soy candles.

Soy wax is much less expensive than beeswax, so if you would like to keep your costs down when making your own natural candles, you’ll want to choose the soy wax over beeswax. You can reduce the costs of the beeswax by rolling your own, but this requires some skill and knowledge- and is more time consuming than just melting the soy wax to make candles.
