26) How do you make soy candles?
The only difference between making soy candles and traditional,
paraffin wax candles, is the ingredients of the wax itself. Soy
is an all natural, vegetable based wax that cannot make a freestanding
candle. When you make soy candles, you need to make them inside
candleholders and containers that will hold the candle as it hardens.
They should also not be burned on flat candleholders, and should
always be in a container when you burn them for safety. Soy wax
cannot be used to make taper or pillar candle types.
First thing you need, in order to make all natural soy candles,
is the soy wax. This can be purchased at any craft store that sells
candle making supplies, or online. You may desire purchasing palm
wax in addition, to help make the candle more rigid in consistency,
but this is a choice you can make by making a few candles with the
palm wax, and a few without- to determine the style you like best.
You will want to purchase dye if you plan on coloring your candles,
and fragrance oils if you want your candles to be scented. The steps
are the same as making regular candles! Melt your soy wax to the
recommended temperature. Just before you are ready to pour your
candles into their candleholders, you add your dye and distribute
it evenly- once that is melted and the temperature is correct, you
add your fragrance, give it a stir to distribute- and pour into
your containers with the wicks in them!
