Home > Remove snowflakes in candles
12) How do I get rid of the “snowflakes” in
my candles? Could it be the scent?
When you make candles at home, there are many factors that can cause
air bubbles and pockets, imperfections and holes in the finished
candle. Sometimes when you use too much of a scented oil, it will
cause the entire candle to appear cloudy, or have small areas with
imperfections, possibly resembling “snowflakes” within
the candles.
If the imperfections you see in your candles are appearing mostly
at the top, then you are waiting too long to do your second pour
of wax. Remember, you want to pour your candle wax into your mold
or candleholder a little over half way, and then wait awhile to
give the wax a chance to start setting up and getting firm. You
then poke holes in the wax around the wick, and then pour more wax
into the mold or candleholder to prevent air pockets, sinking of
the wax around the wick, and other imperfections.
If you notice the problems are mostly around the sides of the candle,
then you are pouring your wax at a temperature that is too low.
Use a thermometer so you can determine what temperature your candle
wax is before you pour it into your candle mold or candleholder.
