4) How do I make Mottling effect with Candles?
In order to make a mottled candle effect look the way you want it
to look, it’s actually a bit of trial and error. Unfortunately,
there is no “formula” that you can follow to create
the specific look of mottling, since mottling has a very unique
look that is not duplicated in more than one candle, even when you
make them at the same time! You have to achieve the right balance
between the amount of fragrance you use, the correct type of wax,
and then the amount of additive used to increase the effect. The
most typical additive used for creating the mottling effect in candles
is called parol oil. Sometimes, you can use mineral oil and vegetable
oil to create the same effect. The best way to make a mottled candle
is to use paraffin wax as opposed to beeswax, soy, or gel candle
waxes. In addition, some fragrance oils have a tendency to create
a mottled effect in the candle wax
To create a mottling effect in your candles, add 1 ounce of parol
oil for each pound of paraffin wax you are using. If you want to
increase the effect of the mottling, simply use more parol oil to
the same amount of paraffin wax.
