8) How do you make a jar candle?
Measure the amount of candle wax that you will need for your jar
candle, and begin melting it. Keep a close eye on the temperature
of the wax as it melts, and make sure the temperature stays between
170 and 180 degrees- and do not let it go above 180 degrees.
To keep your glass jar from cracking when you pour the hot wax
into the container, you’ll want to heat the jar to about 150
degrees. You can do this simply by placing your jars on a cookie
sheet, and putting in the oven. Turn your oven dial to the “keep
warm” temperature if it has one, and if not, just turn it
so it’s below the 200 degree mark.
When your wax has been melted and is at the desired temperature
of 170 degrees, you can pour in your dye if you are going to dye
the color of the wax. It’s also the time to add any fragrance
oil if you’re going to use it.
While keeping an eye on the temperature of your wax, take your
glass jars out of the oven and handle carefully as they will be
hot. With a hot glue gun, glue the bottom of the wick tab to the
bottom center of the jar.
Stir your melted wax again to be sure everything is mixed together
well, and as long as the temperature is at 170 degrees, it’s
time to pour it into your glass jar. Pour slowly to eliminate spilling
the wax all over the sides, because it’s much easier to keep
it off the sides than to clean it off later! Once your wax is poured,
you’ll need to straighten the wick and hold it in place as
the candle hardens. Wrap the top around a pencil or Popsicle stick
and lay the wooden object across the opening of the jar so it will
hold the wick in place.
