18) How to make and start a candle business?

There are many things to consider when starting any business. A candle business can be done from home, which makes it ideal for stay at home moms who want to own a business and earn money without having to leave their children with daycare or sitters all day.

Special considerations for making candles at home, however, is to have the ability to keep your children away from the area that you use to make your candles as the wax is extremely hot, and dangerous for young children. If you can make them in a place other than the kitchen, that is even better, maybe part of your basement can be converted to your candle making business.

You’ll need to consider the volume of candles you’ll plan to make, and that can be hard when you are first starting out. Consider the type of marketing you plan to do. If you are going to focus on craft fairs, flea markets, and other types of shows that you will set up a booth and sell the products right from your booth, you’ll need to have enough inventory on hand for each of your shows.

In this manner of selling, however, you’ll have time to prepare for each show in advance, and can make small batches of candles at a time. If you’re going to have a few sample candles and sell them from catalogs, or over the internet, then you won’t need to have as many candles made, since you can take orders and make all of your candles to order.
